The scriptures describe Dwarka as Krishna’s magnificent golden kingdom by the sea — a city of gates, palaces and prosperity. According to tradition, after Krishna departed from the earth, the ocean rose and reclaimed the city beneath the waves.

Remarkably, marine archaeologists exploring the waters off the coast of modern Dwarka in Gujarat have discovered submerged stone structures, walls and anchors. Whether or not they are the very city of legend, they remind us how deeply the story of Krishna is woven into the land of India itself.
